What is a full mouth reconstruction?

A full mouth reconstruction is a type of reconstructive procedure that takes place when a patient finds themselves in need of more complex and in-depth help than we see in the majority of our patients. While many individuals might need a few root canals or fillings, sometimes patients exhibit the need for help that affects the entirety of their mouth. When you have multiple failing teeth or were born with a condition that requires the reconstruction of your teeth, full mouth reconstruction could be the option for you. Full mouth reconstruction, as the name implies, is a full-scale reconstruction of a patient’s mouth. This includes replacing all of the teeth in a patient’s mouth to give them a functional smile that looks natural and promotes good health.

Why might I need full mouth reconstruction?

Full Mouth Reconstructive Surgery is available in Dr. Van Alstine's office in Ypsilanti, MIFull mouth reconstruction is a large undertaking that is usually required in cases where the vast majority of a patient’s teeth are either missing or will need to be extracted. When that happens, it is sometimes a good idea to take the initiative and start in with full mouth reconstruction.

You might need this kind of procedure, then, if you find yourself with few natural teeth left or have been born with a condition that affects your mouth structure, like the following:
•  Amelogenesis
•  Ectodermal Dysplasia
•  Dentinogenesis Imperfecta

Additionally, individuals suffering from oral cancer might also find themselves in need of full mouth reconstruction. It should also be noted that while a reconstruction includes replacing the teeth in a patient’s mouth, it can also refer to a treatment that is applied to all of the teeth in a patient’s mouth. A patient who needs to have their teeth capped, for example, or who finds they need a mixture of dental implants and dental crowns, is undergoing full mouth reconstruction as much as the patient who requires that all of their teeth be pulled.
