Crown lengthening is a simple surgical, dental procedure that removes excess tissue, and sometimes bone, from around a tooth for a variety of motives, it could be preventive, restorative or cosmetic reasons. Our goal at Van Alstine Family Dentistry is to provide our patients with a healthy, beautiful smile. Part of this thinking includes spotting potential problem areas and making adjustments to prevent future complications. Overhanging, or excessive, tissue can be a source for bacteria to hide, can prevent the attachment of a dental crown, and can limit the appearance of your smile. Dr. Van Alstine can perform a simple procedure, making minimal cuts, to help.
Crown Lengthening Procedure
The crown lengthening procedure is done in our office, often with a simple local anesthetic to numb the area. Once Dr. Van Alstine knows that you are comfortable, we will then proceed to make a series of small cuts to remove excess tissue, and possibly some bits of bone, as needed. Dr. Van Alstine takes extra time to gently slope the tissue around neighboring teeth as well, to help the appearance look natural and beautiful. We often place a couple of sutures as we go. Once completed, the area is washed with an antibacterial rinse to help manage the possibility of infection while healing. Dr. Van Alstine will provide you with care instructions and some patients may need to return within a few days to have sutures removed.
Crown Lengthening for Preventive Care
Sometimes referred to as a gummy smile, patients who have excessive gum tissue that droops over the teeth are providing a place for food debris, plaque, and bacteria to hide. Overhanging tissue creates a fold that can trap decay-causing bacteria and make it difficult for the patient to remove with regular brushing. Patients, unable to properly clean the area are then subject to decay on their teeth and infection of their gums. By removing this tissue through a crown lengthening procedure, we can remove this hiding spot, and help the patient have a healthier mouth.
Crown Lengthening for Restorative Care
When a patient has a damaged or weakened tooth, we can increase its strength and protect the natural tooth structure with a dental crown. At times, there is insufficient natural tooth to properly attach the crown. If this happens, a step we can take is to remove tissue and bone to expose more of the tooth. This will provide Dr. Van Alstine with the space needed to securely attach the dental crown.
Crown Lengthening for Cosmetic Care
Besides being a good preventive option, some patients request the contouring and reshaping of gum tissue for cosmetic purposes. Gummy smiles are not assumed to be attractive, we can enhance the look of your smile, while also protecting your teeth from hiding spots for bacteria.
