Oral Hygiene Instructions
Ypsilanti, MI

This might seem like it goes without saying, but we’re going to go ahead and say it anyway: your teeth are important! They are so important, in fact, that we think you should spend as much time as possible taking care of them to ensure that they last you a lifetime. There are certain things that you should do between visits to our office—things that should be done thoroughly and every day—to maintain excellent oral health that is conducive to the overall strength of your teeth.

Good oral hygiene habits from brushing and flossing can keep your mouth healthy. At Van Alstine Family Dentistry we know that our patients are capable of keeping their teeth in fantastic shape between visits! That is why we have taken the time to look at the issue of oral hygiene and what kinds of things you should include in your routine.

Importance of Oral Hygiene

First of all, it is important to understand that your mouth is, in general, not a very clean place. We don’t mean that in a bad way, but rather want to emphasize that your mouth is full of bacteria, even when you take great care of your teeth. Everything we eat and drink will leave behind some remnants, and this debris can quickly break down and begin to cause serious issues like plaque buildup and tooth decay. Keeping your teeth clean helps to reign these problems in a while keeping your mouth as healthy as possible.

Floss and Brush

You should be flossing and brushing your teeth every day to ensure that your mouth is as clean as possible. You might consider doing this after every meal or after ingesting anything with a significant amount of sugar. This will help avoid cavities and tooth decay in general. Please note that it is advisable to wait 30 minutes after eating to brush. This is to allow the mouth and saliva to do its job breaking down the bacteria and neutralizing the pH.

At the very least, you should floss and brush twice a day—once in the morning, and once at night. This helps clear any lingering debris from the day away while you sleep, and helps to clear away any bacteria that might have been sitting in your mouth overnight so that you are ready to start the day. You should use a soft toothbrush and brush for around two minutes. Floss when you brush, and be gentle but thorough.

Look at Your Mouth

In addition to keeping your teeth healthy, a good oral hygiene routine is a good way to keep tabs on the health of your mouth in general. If you happen to notice odd colorations or formations on your tongue or gums, for example, then it is time to call us for an exam so that we can determine exactly what is happening. Catching issues early is the best way to prevent lasting damage.

Finally, you might want to consider adding in mouthwash to your routine! These come in a variety of formulations and can help keep your mouth in great shape.
