Dental Sealants Ypsilanti, MI

Have you heard the old saying that offense is the best defense? This is a phrase that is particularly true when it comes to caring for your teeth. When your oral health is on the line, it is always better to prevent issues from forming than it is to go in and attempt to fix them once they have already settled into your teeth. Many patients, particularly those who have been away from the dentist for a while, will become too afraid to come in when they realize something is wrong. Do not do that!

A dental patient receives a dental sealant treatment. At Van Alstine Family Dentistry, our focus is on ensuring that your oral health is the best that it can be, period. We don’t judge you; we just take good care of your teeth! We offer sealants to our patients to help avoid problems from occurring.

What Are Dental Sealants?

You might wonder just what, exactly, a sealant is. Much as the name implies, dental sealants are coatings that are placed on the teeth to help avoid things like tooth decay. The process is so simple that sometimes you will even find sealants being applied in clinics or schools. The procedure is a painless one, as well as a fast one, and is a great way to help shield your teeth from damage and help keep them in great shape.

The Dental Sealant Process

To apply sealants, the tooth that will be receiving it is first cleaned thoroughly. It is then dried thoroughly to ensure that the sealant can adhere well to its surface. This is usually done by placing cotton around the perimeter of the tooth and is entirely painless. Next, a special solution will be painted onto your tooth to make the surface a bit rougher than normal, as this will help attract the sealant and lock it in place. The sealant in question will then be applied to your tooth. It is simply painted on, hardens in just a few seconds, and you can go on your way! It is a straightforward and simple process.

Are Dental Sealant Necessary?

In general, sealants are good preventative steps to take to the development of tooth decay that can cause things like cavities. They are not necessarily something that must be done to maintain good oral health, but rather are supplemental steps that can help you keep your teeth in good shape and free of infection and decay.

Who Are Dental Sealant For?

Children are the most common recipients of sealants. Because their teeth are still forming and children are usually still getting the hang of taking good care of them, they often receive sealants to help protect against decay that could damage them early. Young adults or teenagers who have teeth that seem to decay more than others might also want to look into having a sealant applied.
